Abstract
This thesis asks what happens to household purchasing power if automation replaces a large share of work, and whether falling prices and tax-financed benefits can preserve the living standards of displaced workers. It builds a closed-accounting simulation that links prices, wages, profits, taxes, benefits, housing, credit and investment, and runs it on 576 combinations of assumptions under seven financing variants, with imposed unemployment of 20% over 20 years.
Three findings emerge. First, preserving consumption is possible but conditional: of 202 completed paths, both displaced groups kept 90% of their consumption in only 75. Second, a benefit that protects the level does not protect relative position: in all 42 comparisons with a matched control path, displaced workers ended below it. Third, passing cost savings through to prices hurts mainly renters and mortgage holders, whose housing payments are nominal. Indexing the benefit to housing costs is enough when the budget has room (64 of 64 paths), but at the unemployment peak the budget binds in most cases, and indexation then only reallocates a fixed amount.
An empirical analysis of 848 observations from 13 European countries finds a negative, non-significant association between firm AI adoption and employment in exposed occupations (β = −0.545, p = 0.315), stable across 54 robustness checks. In Israel, clerical workers, the most exposed group, were over-represented among the unemployed before generative AI tools, but not more so afterwards (relative risk 1.60 in 2021–2022 and 1.34 in 2023–2024); the clearer change is a rising share of professionals among the unemployed. The main conclusion is that the design of the benefit and its source of finance matter at least as much as its size. The model is uncalibrated and is not a forecast.
