Asset ownership versus debt: who is more resilient to automation?

The difference between labor income and capital income may become decisive — but asset owners are also exposed to risk.

In one minute

Debt, liquidity and capital ownership matter for household outcomes; there is no guarantee that asset owners will always gain.

Four groups instead of one average

The distributional model distinguishes between the employed and those who have lost their jobs, and between indebted and debt-free households. This shows how the same change in prices and benefits affects different groups differently.

Why does capital matter?

Those who hold shares or productive assets may share in the profits of automation. Those who depend solely on wages are more exposed to job losses. But corporate profits and asset values are not fixed in advance.

Valuation and liquidity risk

An asset's price can fall when profit expectations, interest rates or demand change. Even an asset with accounting value does not necessarily provide cash to pay debts on time.

What do the savings tests add?

Step 73 allows for saving, buying and selling shares, and repaying principal. It illustrates the dependence on consumption rules and valuation assumptions, without claiming that the top decile is necessarily protected.

Limitations

The division into groups is an analytical tool, not a representative survey. Data on ownership, debt, employment and income are needed to calibrate it to a specific population.
